There is no question that they have a profit motive for themselves in all this... First of all, it's not true. Second of all, don't you have a profit motive? Aren't you in this stock to make money? Aren't you trying to convince people to pay more for the stock so you can sell the shares YOU ALREADY OWN for a higher price? Why should people pay more now when they can wait for the real shorts, the ones who will show up shortly, and pay a whole lot less for their shares? Because the shorts ARE coming...and right about now they're smelling blood!
