What caused the Protestant Reformation? Was it all just counterweight to the Catholic Church?

Barbara Tuchman's book The March of Folly treats this in detail, developing interesting parallels with the British handling of the American Revolution and the American involvement in Vietnam. The central theme is folly: "the deliberate, conscious, pursuit of policy contrary to self-interest".

I know it sound ridiculously idealistic, but I persist in the belief that at some point it might be possible for us, as a nation, to actually think the consequences of our actions through before we take them, and to base our actions on intelligent assessment of evidence rather than on ideology. I also think that an excellent way to promote this would be to accept responsibility for our actions. Without accountability, what incentive is there to act intelligently?

Maybe I'm a libertarian after all.
