This thread reminds me of time spent in a high school Latin class, laboring through a translation of Ovid's Ars Amatoria. (The teacher was no fool, and knew what would get our attention.)

Ovid had some interesting instructions for ardent lovers. Some of his advice (paraphrased from distant memory): if the woman is a bag of bones, say she is slender as a graceful reed; if she is fat, praise her as lavishly curved. If she is pale, compare her skin favorably with fine white porcelain; if she is swarthy call her healthy and natural. If she is barely out of the cradle praise her innocence and freshness; if she is old, praise her dignity and wisdom.

He goes on like that a bit.

Recalling this many years later, two thoughts spring to mind. First, women haven't changed much. Second, Ovid must have gotten laid a lot.
