Abner--- there really is a different sensibility, call it one of republican austerity, that affects even us "effete intellectual" types, as long as we were raised normally. I remember watching an interview with Francois Mitterand in the Presidential Palace, and being revolted at all the gilt and goo- gaws in his office. It seemed effeminate, ostentatious, and decadent. I knew then the extent to which being an American is "bred in the bone"...
