In the movie, Hank Greenberg is sent to Pittsburgh for his last year as the owner of the Detroit Tigers was paranoid that Greenberg wanted to play for the Yankees and wanted him out of the American League. During a game with the Brooklyn Dodgers, Greenberg and Jackie Robinson collided. Greenberg helped him up and talked with him for several minutes while the crowd watched. After the game, the reporters ask Robinson what Greenberg had said. Robinson said that Greenberg was very encouraging to him and said to let the racial slurs slide off his back. Greenberg knew what that was about and he told Robinson to persevere. Greenberg became Robinsons hero. Later Greenberg was hired by Bill Veeck of the Cleveland Indians and became Scout and eventually General Manager. In that role he hired more African American players then any other team. When Curt Flood sued the majors for the enslavement of players, Greenberg testified for Curt Flood in court. Thus, Hank Greenberg was not only a great player but he was ahead of his time in encouraging racial harmony in big league sports.
