Many months ago, I asked someone on this thread why Sun did not
improve their graphics. Someone answered that there was room for
Sun to improve their graphics but Sun might not want to push the
company further into that market.

Do you have an opinion?

Not really. My most graphics intensive applications is
surfing up pretty pictures on the Web <VBG>. That is mostly
2D. I don't use 3D graphics so don't claim to understand the
technology. But like many people on SI, does not prevent me
from "following" companies and investing based on a high
level view.

In general terms, I suppose it is just a decision Sun probably
make based on cost, sort of what memory or disk drive to use
in designing a box. Workstations do have some Graphics intensive
applications and I am sure some of them will become available on
Wintel platforms as they improve but that is the outlook well
understood many years ago and is not really News for the Sun stock.
If they want to play in their market and compete, I am sure some
product group at Sun will understand the score where they stand
in serving that market and do their best to compete. In any of
these specific areas, it is possible for something else to be better, but surely the whole package from Sun does work well so people use
them... My assumption is that SGI probably had better products
from Sun in graphics area, but SUn probably offered more overall
value.

I did used to have a friend working with expertise in 3D graphics
working at Evans & Sutherland company but I am not if he or the
company exists now :-). A year (or more?) ago TDFX was a hot stock
being pitched at Motley Fool site (http://www.fool.com) and at
that time I did do what you can vaguely call "research" into
the PC and gaming graphics companies and ...became aware of
Nvidia and their cards which are the high end and supplied to
Dell. I ended up making some money on TDFX stock and losing
much more the card maker STBI and SIII and that has taught me that I
really don't understand that space well enough to invest .
(Now TDFX and STBI are merging, but would not recommend their stock).
When I followed and invested in that area Nvidia wasn't public
and investing there was not an option then Internet stocks became
a more interesting hobby and I ended up being lucky there and forgot
about following PC graphics companies.:-) It is a R&D heavy area with
a lot of cut-throat competition from a lot of companies. Every
few years the current King gets dethroned by an upstart and the
current King seems to be Nvidia. The will probably do good for
the short term, but again, trust your hubby more in this area.
I have a poor track record of losing money when I last invested
there.
