"3COM DOCSIS 1.0 MODEM - CERTIFIED BY CABLELABS Ten Vendors Fail to Make the Grade, DOCSIS 1.1 Certification Will Not Begin Until April 2000"
"Only 3Com Corp. obtained certification from Cable Television Laboratories Inc. for its Data Over Cable Service Interface Specification (DOCSIS) 1.0 modem during "Wave 8" testing that ended in late April.
The total number of "CableLabs Certified" vendors now stands at three, as Thomson Consumer Electronics and Toshiba America Information Systems Inc. were certified in March. These vendors earn the right to affix a CableLabs seal on their DOCSIS modems, informing buyers that the product is guaranteed to interoperate with other certified products.
Ten vendors failed to make the grade in the latest CableLabs tests -- Askey, Cisco Systems, Com21, General Instrument, Motorola, Nortel Networks, Philips, Samsung, Sony, and Zenith -- further stalling the development of the DOCSIS cable modem market.
With only three certified DOCSIS vendors, the possibility of a major cable modem retail push in 1999 is increasingly remote. A number of retail trials are underway, but vendors do not expect to ship DOCSIS modems through retail in volume until 2000.
Many cable modem vendors, none of which have obtained DOCSIS 1.0 certification, have recently been hyping their plans to deliver DOCSIS 1.1 products to support packet telephony services. CableLabs threw cold water on that idea in a news release, stating that DOCSIS 1.1 certification testing will not begin until April 2000, later than originally estimated.
