Jock,
You're welcome.
I can certainly sympathize with your situation, but didn't want you to think it was any worse than it was.
By the way, Iomega is on record as saying they will replace any Zip drive afflicted with the "click of death" free of charge, regardless of whether it's out of the one year warranty or not. A guy named Hellier made that statement.
Personally, I never had a problem with my original parallel port Zip drive purchased in April, 1996 which I recently sold to a friend who uses it nearly every day.....he now owns 5 Zip drives.
I replaced the original Zip drive with an external SCSI Zip drive and daisy chained it to my Jaz drive which is connected to my Iomega JazJet SCSI card. No problems so far with the SCSI Zip drive and it "screams" compared to the parallel port Zip drive.
I purchased my external Jaz drive in October, 1996 and use it nearly every day. I also back up the C and D partitions of my hard drive weekly to two Jaz disks using Drive Image by Powerquest....sure saved my bacon after my second hard drive crash in less than three years. After installing a new, bigger, hard drive I was up and running again in less than 1/2 hour after restoring the C partition image from a Jaz disk.
Every single one of my friends who own a computer have a Zip drive. One friend has over 40 Zip disks. Another friend bought an IBM Aptiva from Best Buy in 1997 that included a Zip drive but he's never used it because it's his first computer and he doesn't do much but play games, cruise the web and e-mail his friends/family.
Bottom line, I couldn't do without my Zip and Jaz drives....they've unquestionably made life a lot easier for me. I could go into all the "stuff" I keep archived on Zip disks (such as tax returns since 1992, a Quicken file that is now nearly 5 Mb, downloads/patches for new or upgraded software that take over an hour to download, etc.) but I'll save that for another day.
