Perhaps for MSFT, the solution to this MediaOne dilemma could be to actually work with AT&T?

The article pretty much confirms my theory about MSFT's position. The MediaOne deal is vital to AOL. It is vital to AT&T. It is not vital to MSFT, in any obvious way.

Here's my idea... fighting AT&T would be very expensive and strategically risky for MSFT. And it would help AOL, which is more of a rival to MSFT than AT&T. AT&T knows, that if MSFT really put it's mind to it, MSFT would win this fight (more money, bigger market cap). Why not tell AT&T - look we could stay out of this fight and so let you have MediaOne, and we won't help AOL or Comcast bid for it so it will lower your ultimate costs of acquisition. But in exchage we want the following from you [ here insert whatever Billy Gates and gang can come up with in the way of a wish list ].

This has several good points for MSFT: it doesn't drain MSFT in a fight that is not vital to its interests, it doesn't help the AOL-Netscape-SUNW enemy, and it makes AT&T a strategic partner (could be useful to have such a partner who controls cable in this country in addition to many other things). And it would help the shareprice<ggg>.

Whaddya all think? Hey, MSFT, are you listening<ggg>?
