Jenna, thanks for this excellent cautionary note. I think one way it can be handled is to treat a poster just like a stock. SI has some very helpful search functions now so that you can see who posts what and where and when, AND, you can see how their posts turn out after the fact.

If a poster is unknown and posts and leaves that is not a good sign and I move on. If a poster only posts messages harping FOR or against a stock, that is another cautionary note. By watching what people post, you can come up with a "portfolio" of posters who know what they are doing and whose posts you can choose to study and possibly act upon.

This list has more good posters, BTW, than any other SI thread.

One last note: there is also an Internet "underground" where people participate in all sorts of other trading rooms and then post from there onto SI and visa versa. If you add to this all the other message boards in places like Motley Fool, RagingBull, Yahoo, etc., there are a bewildering array of ways for people to "push" stocks or positions. One cannot discern all the ways such manipulation might be occurring, but combatting the most obvious is a place to start.
