I'm beginning to wonder however the true purpose of the advertising. Is it to sell stock or develop a brand/service that will be profitable.

Probably an element of both there Mad. I truly believe the advertisements at in least in part are to gain customers. With both Amazon and Yahoo, you have to admit that almost everybody has heard of them and a large number of people have used them. Personally, I've checked out the Amazon site, but buy whatever books I do from either the Book of the Month Club or Barnes and Noble. I use Yahoo, but primarily for the message boards and following some of my stocks. Never bought anything there.
