Microsoft's dominant Windows operating system must be divvied up in order to break the software giant's monopolistic grip, according to lawyers and academics gathered Friday for a conference on how to treat the company if it loses its antitrust trial.

At the same conference, the Association for Competitive Technology, a trade group sympathetic to Microsoft, unveiled a study warning that the fragmentation of Microsoft's operating system would ultimately cost consumers nearly $30 billion.
