<I don't think they are any less realiable than a HP for instance. You just get a slower chip and smaller HD, which in 95% of the cases is plenty.>

Ah, if it were only that easy. If I had to build my own system that cost no more than $600, I'd have to cut so many corners that I'd probably end up with a Frankenstein machine. Skimping on the CPU and the HD can only save me so much, you know.

Then when it comes time to install Windows 98, I have to pray that the drivers provided with the el-cheapo components actually agree with the OS. And that's the scary part, since it's more than likely that the components I chose were cheap because they're discontinued and part of an inventory clearance. What happens if the drivers are buggy, or incompatible with future versions of Windows?

At least the good news is that the Whitney chipset will help to integrate components and standardize these low-end machines so that boxmakers won't have to turn to unreliable el-cheapo parts to save money. Not only will the Whitney chipset save costs and bring mainstream graphics performance down to the low-end, but it will also ensure reliability since the drivers will be supported by a stable company with a good reputation for quality. ;-) (shameless plug, I know.)
