LM Ericsson CEO Sven-Christer Nilsson was in Washington D.c. Yesterday to Meet With Senior Administration Officials to Discuss Ericsson's Pending Acquisition of the Qualcomm CDMA Infrastructure Unit. Mr. Nilsson Also Delivered a Message to the Administration That Ericsson's First WCDMA Contract With NTT DoCoMo, the World's Largest Cellular Operator, to Deliver Both Mobile Phones and Base Station Systems Represents an Early Breakthrough in Third Generation (3G) Mobile Communications.

Ericsson CEO Sven-Christer Nilsson met yesterday with Senior Administration and Federal Agency officials to discuss Ericsson's acquisition of Qualcomm's CMDA infrastructure segment.

Ericsson is in an excellent position to enhance U.S. trade by exporting WCDMA (Wideband Code Division Multiple Access) by capitalizing on its significant world-wide market share in the emerging 3G market.

Evidence of this position came with Mr. Nilsson's announcement the same day that Ericsson has been selected by NTT DoCoMo, the world's largest cellular operator, to deliver WCDMA base station systems and mobile phone units. The WCDMA mobile phones used in the 3G mobile systems will provide users with multimedia capabilities, allowing wireless Internet access, as well as sending and receiving voice, data, still and moving images.

Mr. Nilsson re-emphasized that the acquisition of Qualcomm's CDMA infrastructure has not changed Ericsson's commitment to the market-driven standardization and harmonization activities which support the co-existence of two high-level groupings of technologies; EDGE as per ETSI/UWC, and CDMA technologies. The CDMA grouping accommodates three optional modes; FDD direct-spread WCDMA as per ETSI/ARIB, with a chip rate of 4.096/3.84 Mcps according to global operators' harmonized proposal; multicarrier cdma2000 as per TIA with a chip rate of 3.68 Mcps/backwards compatible with cdmaOne as per TIA (TR 45.5); and TDD as per ETSI, harmonized with China's TD-SCDMA.

Ericsson is the leading provider in the new telecoms world, with communications solutions that combine telecom and datacom technologies with freedom of mobility for the user. With more than 100,000 employees in 140 countries, Ericsson simplifies communications for its customers - network operators, service providers, enterprises and consumers - the world over.
