I'm new here but find the discussion interesting. I do have a question for the thread in general and that is:

How will SFAM/IPEC rationalize their product lines?

I've seen the comments about IPEC offering potentially better cu. Given the combined IP/ knowledge of the company can somebody give a breakdown how the various systems stack up against AMAT's

From what I can see in the field AMAT is indeed winning tremendous market share. I suspect that they may end up 1999 with around 60%. That could get their total CMP revenues to the $400-500 mil. Although I love to hate AMAT's tactics, they are effective. Who else in this industry could afford to jump start their CMP business by placing so many( my estimate is that it was close to 30) evals into the field?

I buy the argument that not everybody buys the best, but if they want to stay in the game for long then they probably need to be superior to AMAT, because you can bet that their political leverage and resources will be inferior.

I'd appreciate some kind of synopsis on the SFAM/IPEC "best of breed" relative to the AMAT systems.
