Good post John, I think you caught the essence of what is
is going to happen. I can just barely see parts of the vision ( of MSD and TM) in which Dell the company has invested heavily.
IMO the present stock price has been held down mainly by two factors 1. The temporary surplus of Dell shares by the last stock split.
2. The worry that PC industry is dwindling- an illusion caused by Dell taking market share from less efficient producers.
Analysts who predicted a big reduction in PC sales growth have been proven wrong by results of companies like Gateway and IBM and the estimated growth by IDC and others( who make actual measurements instead of using guesswork) is back up in the region of 17%.
So some funds which are limited by law from owning more than 5%
of any one company have reduced their holdings or at least are not permitted to buy more.
Some of the clues we have to go by are these:
1. Dell is building 7 new facilities this year and Dell does not spend money futilily. Then there is the Tennessee facility being planned and expedited.
2. Ten years ago the average Japanese housewife was worth about
500k mostly in stock investments and now the economy is beginning to recover. They would love to invest in a company like Dell that would provide more than the roughly zero percent obtained from bank savings
3. The Chinese are very advanced in the use of the Internet and using computers or set-top boxes to access shopping and even the horse races.
Now I know very little investors in about Brazil and India, but
there can be a huge demand for Dell stock in the China and Japan markets if the countries allow ownership.
The relationship with IBM which is internationally known and respected is also very important and it appears (from the present
Dell stock price), has not been factored in at all.
Some preliminary results of the mass storage and the Gigabuy operations should show up in the earnings report.
Its hard to say much that others have not already stated here in better terms, but I still do not see any major factor than can prevent Dell from doing what they claim, which is to grow at a multiple of a fast growing market.
Regards
Sig
