His overall record was poor but he showed steady improvement and it appeared that he reached a new level in his last. The issue was the quality of that field and whether he had reached a permanently new high or was his last a one shot deal. I passed on him but it didn't shock me. OK, maybe mildy. I played Prime Timber. I think he ran well. Like a lot of others he lost a lot of ground on both turns, yet he finished close. With a cleaner trip he would have been right there. I think Menifee verified my opinion that he's the best horse. He closed a ton of ground and was still loaded at the end despite getting checked. In a normal sized field or with a little better position he would have won. My concerns about distance and seasoning proved unfounded. He weaved his way through traffic professionally and finished better than anyone. He was still strong after the wire. I haven't read anything yet but I suspect Vicar got hurt of bled. He ran too poorly compared to the other Blue Grass horses. Cat Thief fired his usual shot but as expected didn't get the job done. I thought General Challenge would be all or nothing. He lost a lot of ground and had bad position but generally disappointed. A number of other horses were checked or had their chances compromised by racing wide or being forced too far back early. It was typical Derby. You have to play value because that many horses ensure a lot of contenders won't get a fair crack due to trip. Taking 6-1 on Prime Timber was a very marginal bet for me. I don't think I would have taken it except that it was the Derby. Then again I had already cracked open my Kentucky JTS Brown Bourbon so I was handicapping under the influence. Wayne
