I realize that funds pulled out of equities would normally be invested in bonds, but bonds are not all that attractive to me at the present level.

One could always have a second broker with a money market fund, and significant cash balances could be transferred to broker #2, to be transferred back when needed to go more heavily into equities. Should one be unable to risk the time to transfer the funds, you could make the trade with broker 2. Such is not viable with IRAs and IRAs are where many of us have much of our investment capital.
