Emile wasn't even in my thoughts when I wrote this morning. He is not a part of Feelings in the same way that Terry is. Emile has serious problems and I think most of us would rather never read another post of his- I just skip right by him- but there is a similarity between the two. If they are ignored, they usually don't respond personally. Emile shows up with his strange articles that anyone with common sense deletes as soon as they read a paragraph, and if no one responds he goes in search of more reactive threads. I don't think this equates with sticking my head in the sand; it's more like walking on the other side of the street to avoid the bearded fanatic with the sign preaching the end of the world. Perhaps I underestimate the influence of an Emile? To me he has none and I haven't noticed taht he has won many converts at SI.

I know Coby feels Terry has been rude to jbe, but from the cursory look I have given the posts, jbe engaged in argument with him quite willingly and even enthusiastically, and if you know him, you know what you're going to get from him. jbe does not shy away from anything and gives better than she gets for the most part! She has the choice; Terry isn't forcing her into this communication.

We all have a choice about the amount of participation we allow ourselves here. There are times when the discussions are outside our fields of knowledge, or not to our interests, or perhaps we find them irrelevant or inane or affected. But I don't think we should get into a habit of declaring people or topics non grata too easily.

Do I approve of Terry's style? Not really. DO I like Emile? Not what I've seen of him, although once or twice in cobwebby memory he has been civil and even amusing on other topics. BUt I can stay away or ignore a thread when I feel reasonable discourse is futile or not to my liking. If it becomes threatening, has perhaps 3D ramifications, that's different, and that's where SI should step in firmly and quickly.
