Yes...the winner is usually some horse that stays away from the pace but is peaking for the day...and a horse seeing other horses fade can pick-up...

And its not the distance...its the amount of energy expended...The number of horses on the track...the aggressiveness of the horses...the number of horses willing to run for a clear lead...the starting and stopping and squeezing and bumping...all that adds to the amount of energy needed to run the race...

I liked the Thunder Gulch year...suprisingly also on the list of longshot winners...
