Joan, the full title of the report is: "Rates of Homicide, Suicide, and Firearm-Related Death Among Children -- 26 Industrialized Countries." I would suspect that the reference to "world" rather than "other 25 industrialized countries" or whatever, is simply a careless omission by whoever wrote the summary, but I cannot prove it because I am not able to download the Adobe Acrobat Reader document. Perhaps if you can you could settle the questions you raise about whether they suddenly and seemingly randomly added statistics from third world countries to one category, and what the overall murder statistics are for the other industrialized countries are, for yourself. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is considered to be a generally reliable source of statistics (at least out here in San Francisco, where we are more interested in feelings than thoughts). I did a brief web search for overall international murder rates, but didn't find them. Perhaps someone else would have better luck. My impression is that American murder rates are high in general, gun or no gun, but it would be interesting to see the statistics.
