TO All, News Item from Joong-Ang Ilbo Daily Newspaper (South Korea)
dated May 21, 1996:

Electronics and Semiconductor Industry expects export to grow to
$51.6 Billion. This will be a 18.3 % increase from last year.
The estimate was revised downward from $55 Billion.

This is the first time in Korean history that exports from a single
industry category will exceed $50 Billion.

The participants (which includes Samsung and LG) claim that the low
prices overseas for DRAMs now make it "disadvantageous" to export.
They are now asking the South Korean government to lower the
"Special Consumption Tax for Electronics."
