Richard. many inexperienced investors ignore the execution costs of their transactions. Yet, these execution costs are much more important than the commissions on your transactions!!! If you can save a 1/4point on the buy of 500 ss of a $30 stock, as I do regularly, you more than make up for any brokerage commissions. I trade with a full service major brokerage and almost always get executions on the bid side of OTC stocks, when I use limit orders. which is my habit. On market orders on NYSE stocks, I generally get executions, if not on the bid side, at least in the middle of the bid-ask. No wonder that many institutional and large investors deal with the major full service brokerage firms - for the major savings in execution costs !
