"Will the CIH virus infect a network if it gets into one computer on the network?"

Hey wily,

Yes it can. However, any one who administers a network that does allow outside access to it (Internet, user floppies from home, etc.) and does not have some form of anti-virus software protection enabled deserves the problem. Then again, the users should still be warned of the possibility of bringing the virus in.

"Say I backup my files to another computer on the network at the end of the day.
Then I find that my main computer is infected, but I haven't transferred any files
since being infected. Can the virus still make its way over to the backup computer?"

Depends. If any executable files are accessed on the infected computer from the other one on the network, the virus is then transferred. If they're independant, you should be ok. However, if for example, your application server was infected (highly unlikely) all machines accessing it would also get infected (very bad case scenaario) <g>

I hope that answers your question.
