Peter --

CMTO and CSCO are development partners and their products are completely interoperable. In fact, I think CMTO has the only modem that is.

I did verify my suspicion that CMTO entered the chip that's developed to 1.2 standards with toll-quality voice and tiered services instead of the 1.0 chip. It was a tough call. They knew their customers wanted the fully loaded chip and yet they knew it might take longer to pass.

While waiting for the next round, beginning mid-May, they're shipping DOCSIS-compliant products.

A few clips from recent releases:

MILPITAS, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 29, 1999--Com21, Inc., (Nasdaq:CMTO), Europe's leading cable modem supplier, today announced that its DOCSIS-compliant DOXport(TM) cable modems have been selected by Denmark's second largest cable operator, Telia Stofa A/S.
Telia Stofa plans to expand its existing cable modem service to include standards-compliant modems manufactured by Com21.

MILPITAS, Calif. -- Com21, Inc., (Nasdaq:CMTO), Europe's leading cable modem supplier, today announced that Casema Kabeltelevisie N.V. (Casema), the largest cable operator in The Netherlands, will begin a multi-phase cable and voice modem pilot using Com21's ComPORT(r) cable modems for high-speed Internet access over cable. Casema offers CATV services to 1.2 million subscribers in The Netherlands, and Internet service to more than 20,000 users through its data-over-cable service. Casema is the largest cable ISP in Europe. The Company plans to aggressively expand its Internet services during the next few years.

The first phase beginning in Q2'99 is a rollout to 500 homes in the town of Breda. Casema will be working with TELiNDUS, a European system integration partner for Com21. TELiNDUS will also provide the technical installation, service and support during this multi-phase service trial.

According to Casema, Com21 was selected to participate in the trials because its modems offer a wide range of IP and voice options important to the trial. Henk de Goede, president and CEO of Casema said, "The Internet is core to our aggressive growth strategy. We want to provide high-quality service-packages which are important to attracting and retaining customers. With Com21's solution, we have a supplier capable of providing the hardware to support our marketing strategy."

DOCSIS-compliant products are shipping now.

And, you're right about CMTO being ahead on VoIP. I heard the Terayon presentation at H&Q last week and know they're working on a solution but don't have anything yet. "Head-end is data now, with voice an video later. . . . developing VoIP with Rogers." I don't know where they got their CEO, but my first guess is Barnum and Bailey.
