Realnetworks Launches AT&T-Backed Music Platform
NEW YORK (Reuters) - RealNetworks Inc (Nasdaq:RNWK - news), an Internet media powerhouse, said Monday its RealSystems digital music platform allowing users to download music from the Internet operates on a format developed by AT&T Corp. (NYSE:T - news)

The companies said consumers using RealJukebox, the digital music product operates on AT&T's a2b music format, which secures files and helps protect copyrights. RealNetworks plans to unveil its RealJukebox Monday.

The technology will help make possible the sale of songs over the Internet, a business AT&T and RealNetworks said they believe will change the way consumers buy and listen to music.

''AT&T sees 'soft goods' such as networked music as a strategic opportunity to create new business and expand markets, and a natural extension of our expertise,'' AT&T's Vice President of Corporate Strategy and Business Development Mercedes Walton said in a statement.

RealNetworks said its RealJukebox is the first complete product that allows consumers to play, record, organize, and search for music from a single-user interface. It also said RealSystems is the first complete digital music management architecture enabling users to integrate with a wide range of Internet services and hardware devices.

AT&T said it had been using its a2b music technology for the past 18 months to help major labels and artists deliver CD-quality music over the Internet.
