George, I agree that the future looks bright for FC SAN's. At the present time, however, the interoperability problems are holding us back. EMC is doing very well, because they offer an integrated solution. High end users can afford it. But your smaller company cannot buy an Ancor switch with Emulex cards, and plug them in and make it run. So the mass market is still using SCSI.
I think EMC likes the FC market this way, and I gather from some reports they are trying to keep the FC community fragmented with regard to interoperability standards. Thus you have 2 separate standards groups.
I was encouraged to see that Microsoft has shipped the final beta version of Windows 2000, and is on schedule to release it this year.
Once the FC interoperability issues are resolved, I think the FC SAN market will grow rapidly. It is like a snowball that has started to roll downhill. New technologies are always deployed first in the high-end applications. The only question is when. wj
