Marc, while Apple and Intel may be doing some work to port OS X to Merced, it is not correct that OS X could be on Merced first. Microsoft is already running a 64 bit NT on Merced simulation. About 7 months ago I posted an article that indicated Windows 2000 (NT 5.0) may have incorporated alot of the changes under the hood to facilitate the move to 64 bit. Obviously can't vouch for the correctness of the statement. By the way, Intel has a "hard" deadline to tape out Merced in June for sample production this summer.

OS X on EPIC has been discussed on this thread quite some. Presently, it makes an uncomfortable fit. EPIC will be too expensive for consumer desktops until 2003 or so. In the meantime it will be only in $10K and up systems and primarily in $20K systems and up. Likewise OS X is not quite ready for high end enterprise work and Apple has specifically stated it has no interest in that arena for which it has little likelyhood of success. Rich
