Frost & Sullivan: Unified Messaging Brings it All Together 08:21 a.m. May 03, 1999 Eastern
MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., May 3 /PRNewswire/ -- The concept of unified messaging has the potential to revolutionize the traditional messaging paradigm by merging the worlds of voice and data. This all-in-one messaging format is expected to hold great promise for the manufacturers of the technology.
Unified messaging provides the integration of multimedia (voice, video, fax and e-mail) messages into a single point of storage and retrieval. According to the latest strategic research by Frost & Sullivan (www.frost.com), U.S. Unified Messaging Markets, the market participants that are ready to accommodate the increasing traffic of non-real time communications and exploit the exponential growth of the Internet can count on rapid growth rates.
The expansion doesn't stop there. "Now, unified messaging is moving into the realm of virtual message location where all messages can be retrieved or stored independent of the medium or access device," says Apla Shah, a telecommunications analyst for Frost & Sullivan.
U.S. Unified Messaging Markets covers all the existing unified messaging segments: Enterprise applications, service provider solutions and unified messaging services. The three segments are expected to combine for nearly $550 million in revenues in 1999, topping $1 billion by 2000.
The services segment is expected to generate the most growth among the three segments due to its vast pool of potential users such as wireless and Internet subscribers. The service provider solutions market should benefit from the demand by service providers for platforms that will allow them to differentiate their service offerings. The enterprise segment is currently the slowest-growing, but Shah expects it to overcome disappointing adoption rates to become a mainstream product in the enterprise communications environment.
All three markets exhibit different competitive structures with only a few companies overlapping across markets. Lucent Technologies, Applied Voice Technologies (AVT), Active Voice, CallWare Technologies and Nortel Networks compete in the well-established enterprise segment where the main issue is bridging the gap between the IT and telecommunications departments and providing products that meet the requirements of these two groups.
The service provider market is occupied by traditional enhanced service platform (ESP) manufacturers such as Lucent, PulsePoint Communications, Centigram Communications, Brite and Comverse Technology, as well as software developers including Bellcore and Oracle. Quick time to market and robust architecture of
platforms are the keys to success in this segment.
The service sector is experiencing a dynamic influx of new carriers that are testing or introducing unified messaging services. The ability to capture subscribers at an early stage and the availability of several portfolio offerings geared to the needs of different customer groups will be crucial in the successful positioning of competing service providers.
Frost & Sullivan presents Market Engineering awards to the unified messaging companies that have worked hard to make a positive contribution to the market. The 1998 Market Engineering Product Innovation Award goes to CallWare Technology for its Callegra family of products, which are among the most innovative enterprise solutions targeting the unified messaging market.
The technologies reviewed include computer telephone integration(CTI), virtual message transaction protocol (VMTP), voice messaging user interface forum (VMUIF), voice profile for Internet mail (VPIM), voice response unit (VRU), wide area network (WAN), speech recognition, text-to-speech, speech-to-text and internet message access protocol (IMAP4).
