Ten, I know exactly what you are saying. If I buld a system I'll like use a name brand modem. On the other hand, retail outfits like Compaq, IBM, HP don't use these name brand modems because they have to compete. Compaq for example sells you a "Compaq modem". What is that? You can bet they paid about $10 for it. Gateway used to include something called a "telepath" modem. IBM used to make their own modem. I can vouch for the fact they were junk.
My point is that is the modem in an e-machines any worse than the modem that HP or Compaq uses? Probably not. In some case the
product might even be better. Compaq uses slow Quantum bigfoot drives in their low end. E-machines might even provide faster HDs.
This stuff is getting more and more commoditized every day.
In order to compete, all these companies have to cut corners.
