I also heard that one, also that Waitt insisted on autonomy for the Gateway product group i.e. an independent sub. those alone could have been deal-breakers.

I doubt that buying GTW would have been smart for CPQ no matter how they did it - especially with hindsight on the way CPQ has handled DEC and Tandem, which had few product line conflicts. How would CPQ's presario and commercial lines have been reconciled, especially with a strong manager defending GTW's turf?
