No threat at all. The 384K Nortel wireless demonstration was just for exhibition purposes only to show that the technology does exist for fast wireless. However, per the spokesman, this technology is based on a prototype and is several years away from implementation because hi-speed wireless standards have to be agreed upon. Once standards have been agreed upon, then a great deal of expensive switching equipment/software would have to be put into place across the country for this to become a reality.

See the articleSprint, Nortel Networks Demonstrate High-Speed Wireless Internet for more info:

The reality is that AT&T Pocket Net does provide for nationwide wireless access but at speeds not exceeding 14.4 and more realistically, 9600 bps. Plus the AT&T Pocket Net only provides service where cellular service is available.

So, Metricom is still slated to be the first horse out of the gate to implement 128K wireless even if coverage is somewhat limited to a few geographic areas.
