Derek, I notice that CNET didn't comment on your suggestion that INTC may be holding sway over their coverage of modems. Notice the difference between what CNET said in the x2 article and the e-mail to you:

on-line article: "U.S.Robotics has promised that its modems will be upgradable to the yet-to-be-defined standards, but hasn't said whether
that will involve a hardware upgrade."

e-mail: "There is no guarantee that any agreed-upon standard will work with all existing x2 modems. We certainly expect that it will, but if you know anything about the complexity of POTS standards you know nothing is for sure."

Since CNET "certainly expects that it [yet-to-be-defined standards] will [work with all existing x2 modems]", why did they say in the article that "USR ....hasn't said whether that will involve a hardware upgrade"?

CNET is plainly frightened of INTC [investor in CNET], who apparently has modems in their gun-sights as something to add to the mother-board.
