Continued Sales Growth, More Mergers in 1999 [4-19-99 6:20pm ET]
A survey of game industry executives reveals that companies expect continued growth in the videogame market for 1999, but also expect large companies to merge do to competition and rising costs. The Interactive Digital Software Association released the survey, which represents the U.S. PC and videogame industry. According to the IDSA, 60 percent of executives who responded felt software sales would rise 15-25 percent this year. The executives also believe that PC game sales will continue to be lower than console sales, with a 10-20 percent growth in sales. Game executives do not believe the on-line gaming will catch on in 1999. Those surveyed did not feel on-line games will contribute 20 percent of total industry revenues until 2003 or beyond. Game companies' inability to identify financially viable revenue models and attract mass-market audiences are what is holding back the success of online gaming.
