I agree with your assessment with regards to two waves of reaction and the lack of doomsday scenerio. Most problems in this country are going to be nuisances and inconveniences more than anything else.

However, there is one thing which might bankrupt the economy: the flood of frivolous, semi-frivolous, primarily meritless, and other "blackmail" lawsuits resulting from Y2K issues. The hundreds of thousands of lawsuits will bring the legal system and perhaps the economy to a halt. The lawyers already have their deposits in at the Ferrari dealerships.

Congress is trying to pass a law limiting suits with regards to Y2K issues, but the trial lawyers are an extremely powerful lobby and have the Democrats by the gonads. It will be interesting to see what happens.
