Based on what I've heard:

Day trading... you have no positions at the end of the day
Swing Trading... intraday to about 2 weeks
(www.pristine.com does a lot of this)
Short Term Trading... about 2 weeks to about 3 months
Trading... about 3 months to 1 year
Investing... more than a year

At least that's my understanding. All the timeframes are subjective except day trading which is end of the day flat (longer starts into swing trading). This definition is key to me because my margin is 20:1 (or greater) intraday with no interest, but if I hold overnight, then my interest is 12% (per annum), so if I swing trade, only after my positions earn >12% annualized do I start to make money.

And in day trading, there is actually a sub-category called scalping where you're in for just a few minutes or seconds, picking off 1/8s, 1/4s, etc. In on momentum, out on slow down of momentum.
