Re: "AMD now has almost 50% market."

Whoa. On what planet? Let's go to the videotape:

1) AMD has 100% share of the K-6 market. This is as high as Intel's 100% share of the Celeron market...and as meaningless.

2) AMD has about 1/2 (+ or -) of the U.S. retail market. Unfortunately for AMD, the retail market is only one slice of the U.S. market, and the U.S. market is only a portion of the world market. So what's more significant is that

3) AMD had 4.3 million units in the March quarter and Intel had (roughly) 25 million units. Add in some Cyrix and AMD had less than 15% share of MPU units in the quarter. But, wait, AMD's ASPs were <$80 and INTC's ASPs were >$200, so on a dollar basis

4) AMD had, what, 6% of the market?

I mean, I like the prospects for AMD's stock and everything, but let's keep the discussion based on something that looks a little like reality. - Tad LaFountain
