Hi guys,

Here's info from a friend at unnamed
Internet search engine company regarding performance of
CPUs and disks:

"... uses lots of PCs for their search servers and has
extensively measured the performance of various
components. One result: it doesn't pay to get a
Pentium II or III instead of a Celeron
400/433/466. The performance difference is very small
(<10% at the same clock speed), and the price difference
is large (Celeron 400s sell for $129). I think the
savings would better be spent on getting
more memory or a better screen.

Also as an aside, we have benchmarked PC disks very
extensively. Result: don't buy SCSI, the IDE (DMA/33)
drives are just as fast and much cheaper."

FWIW,

Jurgis
