Hello Pat, I'm currently holding no shares in USRX or ZOOM so no axe to grind here. The type of failure with the Robotics Modem Sportser 28 occured in my system about 3 months ago. It was exactly as stated a "popping sound was heard and an electric flash was seen when the 800 volt metallic surge was performed on the unit." I work in area where we have a lot of ground surges. I happened to be online when it happened. Fortunately my system was new and Dell replaced the modem, motherboard was fried also. bp
