How do you know the surge was only an 800 volt metallic surge? If only that, why did it blow your motherboard? Is that the fault of the modem too?

I lost a motherboard and modem do to lightning. The modem was a Global Village. I do not blame the problem on the modem. Lightening surges are often very powerful.
