I agree, sometimes even wholeheartedly agree, with your entire message.

However, reality is that most people who have money in the market have much less than a sophisticated understanding of what they own and how its price is affected.

As an example, how many people do you think understand that they could beat more than 94% of the equity funds / fund managers during the past 5 years just by buying AMEX:SPY and holding? And how many people do you think would sell their funds and buy SPDRs if they were told / sufficiently educated?

The fact remains that the overwhelming majority of the people are "too busy" to attend to their own financial education and their current / future well being. Expecting them to have the level of skill/knowledge and experience implied by your post, just isn't going to happen in our lifetime.

but it would be nice.
