they control the price itself. thus, they can buy and sell at whatever price they want. if they want people to sell they will drop the price (they don't need to unload shares for that) and if they want people to buy they will raise the price. it's obvious that people get excited when prices rise and scared when they fall. however, sometimes they will use a news item to accompany the move and thus play investors emotions even more. did you know that specialist (and mm's i'm sure) can make huge block trades and not report them on the tape, i wonder if those trades are for their own account?...hmmmm.
manipulation in a thinly traded stock is something different than manipulation in a big-cap stock. although, the price control is the same.
