Just finished solving a puzzle which bugged me for a few weeks and I wish to share what I discovered.
I ordered SystemWorks with my PC. At first, things were smooth and cool. Fast, Useful, and a Joy. Then I needed to re-install Win98.
I couldn't get SystemWorks to load correctly. Setup would HangUp. Then it wouldn't Un-install either. In the process of trying to get things 'normal' again I've re-installed Win98 so often I'm worried about giving the CD a laser sunburn. Each 'attempt' takes 7-10 hours, when I'd rather be doing other things. I've become very familiar with SYSREC, the Win98 systems recovery utility too.
I followed the on-line hints and suggestions from Semantec: Close but no Cigar. &@%&!&!&#@% I had resigned myself to choose between a 'questionable' installation of some REALLY NICE utilities or a 'clean' system without them. Some choice!
Finally, the good part: I had become a fan of Tweak-UI and had installed it along with Win98 every time. I ran Tweak-UI and set things back to 'vanilla', and un-installed it. This time, when I tried to install SystemWorks, things went perfectly. I then re-installed Tweak-UI. My system's now 100%
The lesson: Some software needs a REALLY clean machine to install. I found this out the hard way, and I hope I can save someone else the effort.
Cheerios, PW.
