John, it might be considerably more than that also. I read that when Gerstner came on board with IBM he simply read proposals from his staff for a full year before he took any action. The requirements for Compaq to reinvigorate itself may take more than a year to accomplish, and that's why I see it losing sales. I think that the resellers and channel members see the handwriting on the wall and will demand greater and greater concessions from Compaq in return for carrying the brand.

The odd thing about this is I clearly recall debating Steve (aka HPeace) on this issue almost two years ago. He insisted that Compaq was far superior to Dell in inventory management software. He also insisted that I was wrong when I predicted that Dell would overtake Compaq in market dominance within four years. I think I was wrong on that. I now think it will take only another year to year and a half (which means my original prediction should have been 2 1/2 - 3 years rather than 4).
