Mohan--
Took somebody's advice on DELL thread and bookmarked you...I've got The Elegant Universe, just started it, it is indeed beautiful. Listen to this about string theory: "Just as the strings on a violin or on a piano have resonant frequencies at which they prefer to vibrate--patterns that our ears sense as various musical notes and their higher harmonics--the same holds true for the loops of string theory. But we will see that, rather than producing musical notes, each of the preferred pattterns of vibration of a string in string theory appears as a particle whose mass and force charges are determined by the string's oscillatory patter. The electron is a string vibrating one way, the up-quark is a string vibrating another way, and so on. Particle properties in string theories...are the resonant patterns of vibration."

Thus in a sense there are not really a collection of particles with all those nutsy names (quarks, gluons, muons)--there is a universe made up of vibratory patterns, whose "endpoints" manifest in the "particles" as we know them that build our world.
