Titan 6100

Salomon Smith Barney
Tuesday, May 04, 1999

SUMMARY:
Yesterday, Tellabs announced a new product, the Titan 6100 optical
transport system, which increases network capacity, efficiency and
manageability. The product is a next generation, global optical
networking platform that helps service providers offer new high-speed
metropolitan area services while reducing network complexity and even
operations costs.

The Titan 6100 uses DWDM technology to boost network capacity by as much as 32 times and initial deployments for "point-to-point applications" can be interconnected without transponders, which lowers capital costs and increases reliability and flexibility. This product complements Tellabs Titan family of digital cross-connects and future platforms. The Titan 6100 is expected to be available during the fourth quarter of 1999. The initial release will support global SONET and SDH interfaces.

We believe this announcement is a positive for Tellabs because (1) it
shows Tellabs remains on track deliver new products on schedule and, (2) it confirms that Tellabs will continue to be a major player in supplying equipment to next-generation telecommunications networks. In addition, this announcement is evidence that Tellabs new product development is on track to serve the new and emerging needs of its customers.

This announcement is the second in a few months demonstrating Tellabs
ability to deliver next generation products on time. In December the
company announced it had signed a $100 mn. multi-year agreement with
Sprint to supply its new AN2100 Gateway Exchange voice/data switch
system. This system combines Tellabs' echo canceller and Titan 5500
digital cross-connect technologies with packet and cell technologies
allowing Sprint to place traditional, switched telephone service on its core ATM backbone.
