AG Edwards' Freeman Sees Mkt Narrowing, Shift To Growth Stks

NEW YORK (Dow Jones)--A smaller number of growth stocks will dominate the market toward the latter part of 1999, according to Stuart Freeman, chief equity strategist for A.G. Edwards & Sons Inc.

"We think the market will shift back into growth stocks - the stocks that have really been driving the market in the last couple of years," he said in an interview with CNBC. "The stocks that came off 20%, we think, are the stocks that are going to do best as we move forward."

Within the drug sector, Freeman's picks include Schering-Plough Corp. (SGP) and Pfizer Inc (PFE).

Amid retail companies, Freeman likes Wal-Mart Stores Inc. (WMT) and Safeway Inc. (SWY).

He also recommends investing in Medtronic Inc. (MDT), a medical products company.
