First I'm not pro-UNIX or anything. Sorry but your talking about porting a database engine which in most cases (raw partition interfaces) has kernel specific modules depending on the UNIX vendor. SVR4 as a DDK driver interface which most UNIX'es support now making kernel modules more portable.

Your example though does not represent the bulk of UNIX applications/services which are built upon POSIX and SVR4 interfaces. These applications for the most part require minor edits, recompilation, and runup.

p.s. I spent many years porting applications between HP-UX, SunOS, Solaris, DEC, SGI ; so I know.
