Sudan: Reuters May 4 - After Talisman's annual general meeting in Calgary on Tuesday -- which was marked by a demonstration by about 40 Sundanese nationals and others protesting the company's involvement in the project -- Chief Executive Jim Buckee said the right thing to do was to stay and develop the oilfields to benefit all the people in the African nation.

''We have intelligence gathering sytems and security forces working for us in Sudan,'' Buckee said. ''For the moment we believe our people and our operations are safe.''

About 100 Talisman employees are currently working in Sudan at the Greater Nile Oil Project, which lies some 730 km (450 miles) southwest of the capital Khartoum.

At the Calgary meeting, Reverend Bob Thomson, speaking on behalf of the United Church of Canada and other religious groups, asked if the company would adopt a policy to ensure it was a force for good in Sudan.

''The only way to break the logjam there is through development,'' replied Buckee. ''Talisman's presence there can only be for the good.''

A Sudanese national living in Ontario and at the meeting at the invitation of Talisman spoke in support of Talisman and to encourage other Canadian firms to invest in the country.

''If we Sudanese have honesty in our hearts, we should point the finger back at us because we are aggravating the situation in Sudan,'' said Peter Jola who said he was a rebel fighter before moving to Canada 10 years ago. ''I ask that companies don't just concentrate on development, but also help us achieve peace.'
