Robert,
I`m probably one of the last but I got my hands on a PresarioGX today. Best Buy had 20 come in. Both area Office Depots got 6 each and were sold out. Office Max expected 11 of them any day as did CompUSA.
Interestingly the manager at one Office Depot said that even didn`t
think they were going to get any more and that it might have been a one time deal. He based this, foolishly, on the fact that when he pulled up inventory on the system a couple of days ago there were a couple thousand in stock and today there was virtually none. I guess they have been selling. Grin. The manager at the other Office Depot said he expected more the next couple days.
Most places were surprised that Compaq would use a Cyrix chip and that they could even sell a Compaq for under $1000. Apparently Compaq is considered the Cadillac of the Consumer PC.
While at CompUSA,I compared the GX to the Monorail 133...which was going for 1299 w/the dual scan monitor. For home use the Monorail really doesn`t have a chance against the GX 133.

First impressions were basically the same as everyone else here.
Very small case, high quality. Seems to snap right through everything I do on it. I was dissappointed that the only monitor offering was a 14 inch. Didn`t go for that. Trouble is that since the box is black the consumer is either limited to the 14" or they can get a larger IBM or Acer monitor if they want to match.

Keyboard is a little flimsy...again...if you want a different key layout, and black, your choices are limited unless you go to C. Shopper.

The small size is a tradeoff with expandibility. Problem is that a lot of first time buyers are uneasy and what expandibility as a safety net even though they don`t use it.

I sure wish they would have included a TV out jack. Due to the small size of the unit it sure would have qualified for a semi-portable for someone doing presentations on a TV.

Never the less...with the proper marketing course the GX can be the beginning of a new revolution in PC`s. Price, new types of upgradibility and space savings are all sorely needed in this industry.

Run your Compaq diagnostic and tell me what chip it finds.
Is the modem upgradable to 56k?

Jim
